Stops we made along the way.
- Big Island Brewhaus – Brewhaus with craft beers and food
- Waipi’o Valley Lookout – Historic site with stunning views
- Pepeekeo Maikai Scenic Route – Beautiful four mile scenic drive along hwy 19
Hilo, Hawaii
Lodging
In Hilo, we stayed at a hidden garden AirBnB. This residence is beautiful, a secret gem walking distance to the city’s downtown. It was here that we heard, first saw, and learned of the coqui frog. Please note, if you need quiet while resting, this is not the right accommodation for you. The roof is made of metal, which makes a notable loud noise during Hilo’s frequent rainstorms; and shares a wall to a space that hosts regular and loud gatherings.

Puna District and Pohoiki Black Sand Beach

Note that at the moment GPS directions to Pohoiki are not reliable since not all maps have been updated with the road closures due to the lava flows. The best way to get to the Isaac Hale Beach Park (starting from Pahoa) is to follow Hwy 130 all the way to the end, and then turn left onto Hwy 137, which now ends at Pohoiki. This route will take you also past the beautiful Kaimū Beach Park and over one of our favorite scenic drives.
Food Options in Puna District
- Kaleo’s: Innovative Hawaiian-style Asian-American dishes served in a funky, relaxed space with live music.
- Ning’s: Small, charming restaurant on the main street of Pahoa, offering fresh and authentic Thai cuisine in an airy setting.
- Luquin’s: This laid-back spot dishes up generous portions of tacos, burritos, nachos & other Mexican fare.
- Pele’s Kitchen: Farm-To-Table breakfast spot featuring fresh local fruits, garden-fresh veggies, and local coffee.
- Island Natural Market and Deli: Perfect spot if you prefer to grab something to enjoy at the beach. Great selection of tasty, organic and locally sourced salads, sandwiches, sushi and hot dishes from the buffet.
